Project versus Program Management

Posted on August 30, 2008 by Cory Foy

Glen Alleman has a great post on the differences between project versus program management. Some of the highlights:

* The project manager tries to keep change to a minimum while Program managers expect change and even embrace it

* Success is measured by budget, on time, and products delivered to specification versus Success is measured in terms of Return on Investment

* Leadership style focuses on task delivery and directive in order to meet the success criteria versus Leadership style focuses on managing relationships, and conflict resolution.

About your second point, “Success is measured by budget on time, and products delivered to specification”. I have published recently an article about success and stakeholders which made me ponder about the definition of success. Vast projects that were insanely over budget and behind schedule are viewed right now as achievements. Now the question is, were they successful or not?
