Weekly Nuggets – 9/9/05-9/16/05

Posted on September 16, 2005 by Cory Foy

  • “That was back when I thought simple rules sufficed.”(Kent Beck)
  • “Take “test before code”, for example. It’s a nice simple rule. However, in practice I find that sometimes I just can’t think of how to test, so I code anyway. Often I discover I really could have tested but I didn’t realize it until later. So my rule isn’t really “test before code” but “test before code as long as I can figure out how to test and when I can’t I spend some extra time thinking about how to test except not too much time which depends on what else is going on and then when I’m done I think about how I could have tested or how I could have tested better”. I’m sure if I thought about it a while I could add a few more provisos too.” (Kent Beck)
  • “It’s design philosophy is different from more mainstream languages like Java and C#. Smalltalk is about empowering the individual programmer, rather than limiting the damage he can do.” (Colin Putney)
  • “We don’t go on the air because we’re ready, we go on the air because it is 11:30” (Lorne Michaels)
  • “My job is to deliver value and it turns out that the kind of value I deliver is more like ice cream than money. You know: you can never have too much money ( or get it too fast ) but there’s a limit on how much ice cream you can take in one sitting.” (Charlie Poole)
  • “I am that guy. I’m learning. If you’re interested in long-term investment, then let me learn; and if you’re not, rein me in.” (J.B. Rainsberger)
